Your Questions About Macbook Air Superdrive

Lisa asks…

Should i get the macbook air or macbook pro for college?

Here’s the thing: Im an incoming commuting college freshman and I need help in choosing a macbook computer. Im basically going to be using it for writing papers, for pictures, for music, and I guess for watching movies. You know, the basics. Im not really interested in gaming and editing. Im stuck between the pro (13 in) or the air (either the 11 in or the 13 in). The thing is, ive crammed a lot of classes, well 4, which means a lot of books. So I don’t want something heavy but from what I am aware, some books may have cds and if I get the air, I would either have to get a superdrive or use that thing where I put the cd in my desktop or another laptop and access it through my mac computer. Also, if I get the air, if necessary, I can get the 500 gb gdrive slim portable usb drive for extra space.

So yeah. Which one do you guys recommend?

admin answers:

I would go for the Pro for a few reasons.

1) While the Air is extremely small and thin and easy to carry around, that by no means makes the Pro chunky. Mine is the most powerful yet thin laptop I have ever had.
2) The Pro is more durable, especially since your going to be keeping it with your books. The screen will be less likely to crack.
3) You will be able to avoid spending extra money by getting an external CD/DVD drive.
4) The Pro has a lot of memory, so you won’t be needing that portable drive either.

The price difference isn’t that much, considering what you are buying. More memory. A disk drive. And a durable computer monster that will last years.

Richard asks…

Why do people hate the Macbook Air so much?

I don’t get why people hate the macbook air so much. Is it the lack of ports, the superdrive or the price? I for one love my macbook air due to its size and weight. Also the fact that Apple didn’t dumb down the processing power to get thinner is a big plus. It seems like its hard to find an air supporter, and I just want some opinions why you like or dislike the air.

Also I bought mine used on Ebay for $750…that could be partially why I love mine so much :)

Because some poeple prefer windows over anything, always have, always will

Joseph asks…

MacBook Air = dumbest thing ever?

Get this:
——————————
MacBook Air = $1,799

Processor = 1.6 GHz
RAM = 2 GB
Hard Drive = 80 GB
Optical Drive = None (you have to buy an external one for $100)
—————————
MacBook = $1,299 (the middle one)

Processor = 2.4 GHz
RAM = 2 GB
Hard Drive = 160 GB
Optical Drive = 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
—————————-
$500 for a Slower, Lower Capacity Hard Drive, Optical Drive Lacking computer?

Youve got to be kidding me. Just because its less than an in. thinner

I’ve also noticed that the only difference between the $1,299 macbook and the $1,499 one is the size of their hard drives; 160gb and 250gb, respectively. HOWEVER, if you get a $1,299 you can upgrade your hard drive to a 250gb one for only $100.

Did anyone else notice this?
This is one of the few reasons why I don’t want a mac. A lot of computer-retarded (as well as consumer-retarded) people have/buy them

If you don’t believe me: http://www.apple.com/mac
PS – I still like Mac OS X regardless!

I know it is really bad most of the features and i herd the battery system is really low.

Helen asks…

Macbook Air–what do i need to buy “with it”?

So i’m getting a macbook air, i love the slick look, and i need something light and comfortable to carry. My question is what, if anything, do i need to buy with it?
I just use it for work (I’m a law student), so I don’t care about movies/ music/ etc. All I need is for it not to crash on me, and for all my documents to be recovered in case something does happen. What do you guys suggest? They’re offering a diff. processor, hard drive, superdrive… I don’t need any of that stuff, right?
What about the protection plan–is it worth it?
Also, is there “Word” or something pre-installed on there?
p.s. should i buy it at apple store or on amazon–taxes, shipping, etc?
People who know nothing about it–please don’t leave your answers here. Answers such as “it breaks easily” are not helpful–i mean, the laptop hasn’t come out yet, where are you getting this from?

admin answers:

For apple care it depends. I have a first gen black macbook without any extended warranty. It has never give me any problem. And after three years that product will most likely obsolete anyway.

Judging by your course, Mac Words (Yes you have to buy it) is a necessity.

As for the hardware;

-Time capsule (500 GB or 1 TB version, for your case either one will do) for wireless connection + extra storage + back up. (80% Yes)

-A USB- Ethernet adapter for wired internet connection (99% Yes)
(Steve, We have not advance that much into a wireless world yet.. At least give us this for free.. )

-If you have some cash to spare (like extra 1k+) get the 64GB Solid State Drive (less chance for data corruption, less noise, less power consumption and way more faster compare to that pathetic standard 80 GB harddisk installed) and 1.8 g cpu version. (10-20% Yes)

-If this is your only computer get a super drive is 100% yes!
If not, 20% yes.

I think thats about all you need.

Im going to get one as well, but honestly speaking, I advise you (and myself lol) to stay put for another 2 to 3 month. A lot of specs here (maybe price) will definitely be revise and upgrade. Apple first gen adopters often get burned pretty bad.

PS:I don’t really agree with other wireless routers reset issue. I have a linksys wireless router running 4 yrs 24/7 with me and I didnt reset it a single time.

Jenny asks…

FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS USING MACBOOK AIR?

I am currently a Junior in high school, and am looking to get a laptop, and one of the major things that I am keeping in mind is being able to have a dependable laptop for college. Among the “crap” that I am bringing is going to be my “souped up” desktop computer (mainly for the reason that I have invested a lot of money in building it, and accessories), and I am going to be looking to (1) network my desktop and laptop together, and (2) (if I get an Apple) have a dual-boot of XP. Long story short, would the Macbook Air be a good laptop for the campus life.

***Forget about price, because I would be able to get it for about $1,200 with the superdrive, so optical or price would not be relevant in making a choice.***

Thanks,
Graham.

You need to see with your school if they support macs. If they do then you could use it on your campus but I wouldn’t recommend it because of compatibility issues. My university supports Mac’s and I had this class where we would write papers on them. If you send attachments to a PC we would not be able to open them due to compatibility issues. We hated Mac’s during that semester. I guess you could dual boot and split disk 50-50 but that would not leave you much space if you like to download music, movies or whatever. Mac-book air would only be good as your secondary laptop. I wanted one too but after researching, it’s not worth it. It is a weak computer in a nice shiny case. You would be better of getting a nice Sony Vaio which will kill that mac-book air performance vise and hard drive size.
